SPINE SURGERY
A patient presented to The POSH - Pondy Ortho Speciality Hospital, Pondicherry with severe neck pain radiating to the left upper limb, accompanied by progressive numbness and weakness in the arm and fingers. Symptoms had been escalating over several months, significantly impairing daily activities, work capacity, and quality of life.
MRI evaluation confirmed C5-C6 cervical disc herniation with significant cord and nerve root compression. The clinical picture was consistent with cervical radiculopathy and early myelopathy, necessitating prompt surgical decompression through Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF). Conservative management had failed to provide relief, making surgical intervention the definitive treatment of choice.

"Complete cervical disc removal, nerve decompression, solid fusion — years of neck and arm pain resolved in a single precise operation at The POSH."
The ACDF procedure was completed successfully with complete removal of the C5-C6 disc, precise interbody cage placement, and solid anterior plate fixation. Intraoperative neuromonitoring confirmed full nerve root and cord decompression throughout the procedure. The patient experienced immediate relief of neck and arm pain upon recovery from anaesthesia.
Post-operative cervical collar immobilization was followed by a structured physiotherapy programme. At four weeks, the patient demonstrated full cervical range of motion and complete resolution of radiculopathy symptoms. No residual neurological deficits were noted at follow-up visits, confirming an excellent outcome.
